SIGNS OF DETERIORATION

OSMOSIS / BLACK SPOT ALGAE

What is osmosis in a fibreglass pool?
Osmosis are blisters of moisture trapped within the layers of fibreglass. Osmosis generally happens after 10-15 years of the life of the pool. Once osmosis is present in your pool and some of the blisters bust, algae management will become difficult to control resulting in black spots and contamination of the pool water.  It is very difficult to treat and remove osmosis blisters from your pool without having to resurface the pool with a new fibreglass lining. With today's research in resins and fibreglass and a qualified technician, these blisters can be repaired efficiently, bring longevity to your pool.

GEL COAT WEAR

The final coat which we see on fibreglass and fibreglass resurfaced pools in known as the Gel coat or Top coat. Over the duration of the pool's lifespan, this layer slowly breaks down due to the harsh Australian UV exposure, bather use, and incorrect pool chemistry. First signs of this deterioration would be “whitening” or fading of the pool surface. These faded areas will be of a rougher texture and if rubbed, have a “chalky” apperance. If these areas are untreated the Gel coat will break down and expose the fibreglass below. Now that the fibreglass has no protection and if left in this state, it is at risk of becoming brittle resulting in a more extensive repair.

CRACKING / CRAZING

As a fibreglass pool gets older, gets exposed to harsh UV, and is surrounded by corrosive chemicals throughout its lifespan, it is only normal that the pool becomes brittle leaving is vulnerable to cracking. Anything from heavy rain causing subsurface water pressure, leaking, plant roots and terrain movement can result in the pool slightly moving. This movement can create pressure on the pool causing crazing cracks (Hairline Cracks) in the Gel coat and cracks in the fibreglass.
